CAT LOVER'S GUIDE TO THE 10 TOP CAT BREEDS

Sydney, Sushi and Zoey circa 1994

Long-haired or short-haired, tabby to tuxedo, our four-legged furry feline friends come in countless varieties. Chances are if you're a cat lover like me, you love them all. I've had several cats throughout my life, and each has held a special place in my heart, but my favorite cat, the cat of my life, was my beautiful daughter, Sushi. The sushi was so indescribably special, like no other cat I have ever experienced. She was sweet and loving, prissy and majestic. A real cat princess. She has been my constant companion for 18 wonderful years. She's been gone for over 10 years now, and sadly, when she passed away, I had no idea cat cloning was a possibility. If only I knew enough to preserve his genetics.

Sushi

Sushi was my first cat and my last cat, but lately I thought it might be time to let another feline into my heart, so I researched different breeds of cats trying to figure out which race might look the most like Sushi. . I've put together my list of the top 10 cat breeds. Which one do you think resembles Sushi?

#1 Maine Coons

At the top of the list is the mighty Maine Coon cat. This breed is known for its massive size and long fluffy coat. Adult Maine Coon cats can weigh anywhere from 12 to 18 pounds, with some pushing 20. Not only is this breed playful and affectionate, but they are also intelligent and can be easily trained. The Maine Coon is a perfect pet.

#2 Ragdoll

This breed of cat loves to be picked up and cuddled, hence the name "Ragdoll". Known for being incredibly laid back and open to a good cuddle, these cats are a perfect addition to a family with children. Some are even known to play dress-up. Although their coat is long and fluffy, Ragdolls do not have an undercoat, so they are less likely to tangle. This breed is also easy to train, which makes the Ragdoll an excellent all-around cat.

#3 Scottish Fold

The Scottish Fold is easily recognizable by its folded ears. This cat is highly sought after due to its distinct appearance and desirable personality. They are a loyal breed that bonds to one person but are always open to socializing with new people. The Scottish Fold appreciates attention when you can provide it, but will always happily spend its day lounging around.

#4 Siamese

With their light coat, dark face, and striking blue eyes, the Siamese is one of the most recognized cat breeds. If you are looking for a cat that will be your best friend, the social personality of the Siamese will be perfect. This breed will tirelessly follow and “talk” to its owner through meows. With this exuberant personality, the Siamese takes advantage of a family home to fulfill his need for affection.

#5 American Shorthair

The American Shorthair is the happy medium of every household. It is a medium-sized breed that adapts to any lifestyle. This social and intelligent cat enjoys good playtime with its owners or even a house guest, but will also appreciate a good nap if needed.

#6 Persian

The Persian is the feline couch potato. They love affection and are great companions and when you leave them alone you will most likely find them in the same place when you return. This lazy cat lounges around all day and can make a great cuddle buddy at night. Be careful, daily grooming is necessary so that the Persian's coat remains worthy of its royal personality.

#7 Sphynx

If you've ever seen a hairless cat, it was probably a Sphynx breed. Despite its name, the Sphynx actually originated in Canada due to a recessive gene that makes the cat hairless. This breed shows loyalty by following its owners and even wagging its tail, some owners have described their personalities as "dog-like". With its lack of fur, this cat is known to cuddle up for warmth and even wear sweaters!

 #8 Bengal

The stunning Bengal originally developed as a hybrid of an Asiatic Leopard Cat and a domestic cat but is now bred by breeding Bengals with other Bengals. Although the Bengal may look like a jungle cat, they are very friendly and affectionate companions. They love people and animals. When you're bored, the Bengal's wild side shines through, and you'll likely find them perched high, climbing, and surveying their surroundings.

#9 Exotic Shorthair

Like the Persian, Exotic Shorthairs are extremely gentle, docile, and lovable. When not cuddling in your lap, this breed is always up for a good playtime. Unlike its Persian relatives, this breed is not as needy when it comes to grooming and as a result, is sometimes referred to as "the lazy Persian."

#10 Burmese

The Birman likes to be the center of any household. This sweet companion likes to interact and follow its owner everywhere. This breed is known to be interactive and social. These cats appreciate good cuddles and prefer homes where they will receive attention, but they will be happy with the company of other animals in the house.

Decisions, decisions… it's hard to stop at just 10 breeds, they are all amazing and beautiful in their own way. Which will I choose as my next cat? Stay tuned!
